The free options are genuinely fine — for some people
The Raycast extension costs nothing and works. If you already live in Raycast, select some screenshots, run the command, done. What it doesn't do is watch your folder: every rename is a chore you remember to do, which for most people means a chore you stop doing in week two. If manual batches fit your habits, use it and keep your money.
ScreenshotScribe is the most interesting free option: donationware that runs Apple's on-device models, so nothing ever leaves your Mac. The catches are real — it needs macOS 26 or later on Apple Silicon, and updates are manual. On current hardware, and if you're comfortable babysitting a hobby project, it's a legitimate choice.

Zush ($38) and NameQuick ($69) are general-purpose AI file renamers that also handle screenshots, both with folder watching and local-model support. If you want one tool for every messy folder — downloads, invoices, scans — they're the broader hammers. They also cost 2–3× ScreenSage's planned $19.99, and neither is screenshot-first: no capture-aware naming, and setup assumes you're organizing everything.
FilesDesk is in the same general-files camp with credit subscriptions. Renamed.to is document-centric and pay-as-you-go ($9 per 1,000) — a good shape for a one-off purge of 3,000 old files, a wrong shape for an ongoing screenshot habit.
